THE LETTER
AMAKA: You were once my friend and you would always remain my friend no matter what happens. This is LIFE, anything is bound to happen to anyone anytime, so please forgive me for not being here for you, my parents wouldnt permit...
[ UCHENNA'S apartment one weekend, no school today and both AMAKA'S parents and her junior went for a wedding. Amaka had always wanted to visit her friend UCHENNA but her parents wouldnt consent, saying she would influence Amaka negatively. ]
UCHENNA: ( Admist tears ) Just seeing you, you have no idea how much that means to me. Ever since poeple discovered i was with child, they all deserted me like a patient with FLU.
AMAKA: I guess you know your TRUE FRIENDS now...
UCHENNA: Did you say FRIENDS? You are the only person who had considered greeting among all my friends. I never doubted your sincerity for ....
AMAKA: ( CUTS IN ...) Please dont think that way. Im very sure they all want to come but they just dont have the time yet...
UCHENNA: Dont try to interceed for them. I saw CYNTHIA at the market some days back and she just avoided me. I guess a friend in need is a friend indeed.
AMAKA: There's something i've always wanted to ask you ...
UCHENNA: Go ahead, im listening ...
AMAKA: Why did you let him do it? Why didnt you just say NO? Remember you promised not to let him touch you when you first told us about him...
UCHENNA: My dear, men can be tricky at times. He promised, he promised nothing would happen, and if anything should happen, he would be there for me. He swore he loved me ... ( Broke down in TEARS )
AMAKA: Its OK. We are all human, it could happen to any of us ...
UCHENNA: No, please. I dont need the sympathy. I brought this on myself. For some reason, i feel i deserve it, because you warned me, but i refused to listen...
AMAKA: You did listen, you were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. So it wasnt your fault.
UCHENNA: What was i thinking? He told me he wanted to gimme something, i should see him at home. By that time of the night, i guess i was FOOLISH...
AMAKA: Stop blaming yourself, just believe that evrything happens for a reason. You made a mistake but you can still correct that ...
UCHENNA: How am i going to do that? im stuck in a marriage with someone i dont even like anymore. He hardly stays at home. Sometimes, he leaves for a week without leaving any feeding money at home...
AMAKA: Your only consolation right now is your child, she should be your source of joy. You should make her your responsibility and try as much as possible to train her in the right way so she dont make the same mistake you made, and maybe someday, you would find love again...
UCHENNA: Love? Did i hear you say LOVE? Not in this lifetime or the next. Men are wicked, all of them are the same, they manipulate you into loving and dump you when the going gets tough...
AMAKA: Hmm, thats what you once said before falling in love with him... ( Looks at her watch ) Jeez! Its almost time, i have to get going now, but i promise to come visit you when next im free. I dont want mum and dad to know i left the house in their absence.
UCHENNA: Alright dear. Thanks for coming, you have no idea how much that means to me.
( She led Amaka to the door and wave her BYE. While on her way home, she kept going over the discussion she just had with UCHENNA, talking to herself as she huried home. )

AMAKA: ( To herself ) At first, they say it cant be possible. "I CANT FALL IN LOVE". I guess thats why they call it falling in love because you dont know when it happens to you, no one would fall on purpose. But the TRUTH is, life is just like a circle, "WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND". Today she can swear never to love again, tomorrow, she would end up saying LOVE IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME. Might end up in tears again and thats how it keep going round and round until she meets the right person.
MAMA AMAKA: AMAKA!!! AMAKA!!!
( But she couldnt hear her calling, she was lost in thoughts. Until her mum found her sitting on a stool at the backyard gazing at the SKY )
MAMA AMAKA: Amaka! What are you doing? Whats wrong with you? ...
AMAKA: Oh, Mum, Good Evening. Nothing, i'm just relaxing...
MAMA AMAKA: Just relaxing and you didnt hear me screaming your name all these while? ... Tell me, whats the problem? ...
AMAKA: Mama, like i said, i was just relaxing. I must have dozed off when you were calling. I'm sorry i didnt respond. What would you have me do? ...
MAMA AMAKA: Hmm, If you say you're just relaxing, theres no problem, even though i know there is something bothering you. I just wanted to see if you're around. I'm going to the market.
AMAKA: Alright ma. Please dont be long, its gettjng late and it isnt safe anymore...
MAMA AMAKA: Its OK. Thanks a lot for the care.
AMAKA: ( Still staring at her mother as she disappears slowly into the dark ) At times, there are some things you just cant tell anyone, even those very close to you. Some secrets are just too personal that you choose to keep it to yourself than share it with others.
AMAKA: While sometimes, even though you know someone is having a hard time, giving them their space is a more better option than trying to intervene. Sometimes, what we need is a moment with ourselves, not people to open up to. And the best people are those that understands, that would give you that space and let you sort yourself out, hoping you figure yourself out but they still await, ready to assist you if you cant.
{ Just then, her junior brother NONSO runs into the compound screaming }...
NONSO: Sister!!! Sister!!!...
