AMAKA (EPISODE 16)
MAMA AMAKA: As hard as it is to
accept, there is nothing we can do about it. My husband, your father is dead,
and for some reason, I feel relieved, because it enabled me set my mind at
ease. It served as some sort of closure. Knowing his whereabouts, instead of
spending each day being worried about what may have happened to him.
AMAKA: Yea, for some reason, I felt at
ease. It’s a sad loss but nothing is unbearable.
MAMA AMAKA: The actual reason I called
the both of you here this night is to get certain things clear to you guys.
Your father's bank account was frozen as a result of the mysterious
circumstance which he was killed. He was believed to be involved in drugs. As
you both know, I’m a full house wife, I’m jobless and I have nothing to do to
earn money...
NONSO: In that aspect, I think you are
wrong. Before this happened, we were having a conversation and you stated you
had your certificate. I told you it would be useful some day and I think that
day is now...
MAMA AMAKA: With the increasing rate
of unemployment in the country, what are the chances that I can secure a job in
less than a month with a second-class upper certificate? ...
AMAKA: Well, you never know until you
try. Besides, I believe that with God, anything is possible...
MAMA AMAKA: That True. But right now,
you guys would have to limit the way you eat, spend money and manage the
resources in this house, until I cam secure a job with enough salary to take
care of us. We are lucky this house wasn't bought with your dad's name; else,
the police would have confiscated it as well, leaving us homeless....
NONSO: Don’t worry mama. Everything is
going to be alright. I would get a minor job to earn us some money, no matter
how little.
MAMA AMAKA: That’s very thoughtful of
you. But first, we have an urgent issue at hand. (Turns to AMAKA) Your brother
here got your friend CYNTHIA, pregnant. Do you know about this? ...
AMAKA: Yes I do. But who am I to made
decisions. I had to wait and let him open up to you himself...
MAMA AMAKA: That’s a good move, but,
the problem is, your brother doesn't know what to do, he has no plans for the
future, as a father. Right now, I have a lot to think about so I’m going to
leave this issue in your able hands. Cynthia is old enough to made decisions,
so the 3 of you should sort it out and tell me your conclusions. Let’s see if
we're to meet her parents or otherwise...
NONSO: Thanks MUM. Thanks a lot for
taking this lightly, thanks for not being too harsh on me despite the fact dad isn't
here anymore...
MAMA AMAKA: What can I do? You're
going to be a father soon, so I guess you might as well start making your own
decisions now instead of letting others make them for you.
(Along the path leading to Amaka's
church, Emeka has been waiting for her every day by 3:30pm hoping she would
come around. It’s been days now since she asked him to wait there and she hasn’t
shown up, still, he kept coming believing that one day, she would show up ...
And this faithful evening)
EMEKA: (Sitting on a log of wood along
the path leading to the church when he sights someone coming in his direction
from afar, by each second, the figure gets bigger. He stood up and ...) Wow, Finally...
AMAKA: Good Evening ... (She greeted
and kept going her way, forgetting she ever met someone like him)
EMEKA: Please wait, have you forgotten
me? You asked me to wait here a few days back but you didn’t show up. You were
supposed to lead me to your church for fellowship...
AMAKA: (Turns around, stares at his
face for a while and ...) Oh, I'm so sorry. I totally forgot about you. Well, that’s
where I’m heading to right now, you can follow me...
(On their way ...)
EMEKA: What happened? Why didn’t you
show up the next day after you promised and asked me to wait for you...?
AMAKA: I never promised and my dad
passed away, I’ve been home ever since trying to console my mum. We buried him
a few days back.
EMEKA: Ehya! Sorry dear. I'm sorry I
asked. So what was the cause of his DEATH? Sickness or...
AMAKA: Can we just change the topic.
The cause of his death is complicated. I can’t start explaining and certainly
not to a stranger...
EMEKA: A stranger? I thought we are
friends already. Fine, my name is EMEKA, so whets your name? ...
AMAKA: I never asked for your name.
The only reason we are even talking is because you mentioned my church, if
not... Don’t worry, if you become a frequent member, you would know much more
than just my name...
(They arrived at the church just in
time for the opening prayers. He had to sit with her since they came together.
Before the fellowship ended, Emeka almost fell off the bench 4 times, he was
dozing uncontrollably. After the fellowship...)
AMAKA: What’s up with you? Do you even
sleep at home? Or you're a security guard? ...
EMEKA: Not that jare. It must be the
wine I took before coming. It must contain some sort of sleeping pill...
(Ikenna showed up in front of them and
...)
IKENNA: Amy, I heard about your dad.
I'm so sorry. I pray his soul should rest in peace...
AMAKA: Thanks a lot. I have to be on
my way home now. It’s getting late already.
IKENNA: How about NONSO? It’s been
quite long I last saw him in fellowship. Hope nothing is wrong with him? ...
AMAKA: He's fine. There are just some
urgent matters he needed to attend to. IKEM, we would talk next time, like I
said, it’s getting late.
(She heads for the church gate ...)
EMEKA: Hey, wait for me! How am I
supposed to know the way back home....? (He runs after her)
IKENNA: (To himself) what’s up with
this girl? The other day, it was EMMANUEL, Sandra's brother. Today it’s another
guy; she didn't even introduce him to me. I don’t trust this girl anymore O.
(Recalls the conversation he just had with her) Wow, she called me IKEM, she
gave me a nick name, I’m really close, very soon, just very soon ...
